To provide adequate fire protection, an FD60 fire door is usually 54mm wide. Compared to standard sizes for internal doors, this is thicker to keep a blaze at bay for longer.
There are certain other specifications you can always expect from an FD60 fire door leaf. These include:
Yes, an FD60 door needs a frame that has been tested and certified as part of the same 60-minute fire-rated assembly, not a standard door lining.
The materials, thickness and intumescent strips all play their part in fire protection. These all combine to stand up to heat for longer than a standard internal door and stop the spread of fire. An FD60 door is designed to give twice the protection of an FD30 fire door, so you're safer for longer in the event of a fire.
Certified FD60 interior fire doors will have a label including a circled UL or WH on the top or hinge side of the door. This indicates that they have achieved the appropriate fire rating.
Just like the rest of our internal doors, you can choose a fire door in a wide variety of styles. Check out our extensive range of competitively priced doors to find the style to suit your property. Here are some of our most popular fire door options:
Oak internal doors are extremely popular and many of the same styles are also available as fire-rated doors. An oak veneer door can provide the appearance of natural oak to tie in with other home decor.
Hardwood doors make ideal fire doors. Whether finished with a real wood veneer or laminate, you can get the look you're after.
It might surprise you to know that FD60 rated doors can include glass. As fire doors should remain closed, this is ideal for maintaining the light flow between rooms. There are a wide range of FD60 fire doors with vision panels, with many more available upon request.
Just like the rest of our internal doors range, our fire doors are available unfinished, primed and fully finished. We have a selection of colours available but your fire doors can also be painted to suit your decor.
From traditional to contemporary, there's a fire door to help your house look its best. You can protect residents from a fire without sacrificing style.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, FD60 doors can include a vision panel (glazed viewing window) without losing their 60-minute fire rating, provided the glass and beading are certified fire-rated glazing. Fire-rated glazing uses intumescent interlayers that expand under heat to seal the glass in place, unlike standard glazing. Vision panel sizes and shapes are restricted by the door's test certificate, panels can't simply be cut to any size on site. Glazed FD60 doors are commonly used where sightlines are needed across a fire compartment line, such as office corridors.
Yes, FD60 doors are most commonly fitted as internal doors, separating rooms or compartments within a building to contain a fire for 60 minutes. They're a legal requirement in the internal common areas of flats, HMOs and similar shared residential buildings. Commercial and industrial buildings use them internally to protect escape routes and stairwells.
Genuine FD60 doors carry third-party certification confirming they've passed fire-resistance testing, rather than relying on the manufacturer's word alone. Certification marks are usually found on a label fitted to the top or hinge edge of the door. Third-party certification provides ongoing factory audits, not just a one-off test. For commercial or shared-building installations, building control will typically ask to see this certification as proof of compliance.
An FD60S fire door is an FD60 door with the added "S" rating for smoke control, meaning it includes smoke seals to restrict the spread of smoke as well as fire. The "S" suffix adds cold smoke seals around the door edges, which standard FD60 doors don't always include as standard. FD60S is commonly specified for escape routes and communal areas where smoke inhalation is as much a risk as the fire itself. When comparing quotes, check whether smoke seals are included, an FD60 door and an FD60S door aren't automatically the same product.
An FD60 fire door blank is an oversized, uncut fire door core supplied without final trimming, hanging or finishing. It's usually used by joiners and door manufacturers to create a bespoke door to the exact size and style needed. Blanks let installers cut down to a non-standard opening size while keeping the certified fire-rated core intact, within the trim allowances stated on the test certificate. They're supplied unfinished, primed or veneered, ready for site finishing or further joinery work. Because certification only covers specific trim limits, blanks must be cut within those limits or the fire rating is void.
An FD60 fire door set is the complete assembly including a door leaf, matching frame, hinges, seals and ironmongery. Everything is supplied and tested together as one certified unit. Buying a set (rather than a door leaf alone) keeps the tested fire performance intact, since FD60 certification applies to the whole assembly, not just the leaf. Sets are supplied with pre-hung frames, so on-site fitting only requires final adjustment rather than full frame construction. See our fire door sets page or contact us for a quote.
